I am considering purchasing this software since Photoshop is trying to put photographers out of business. I fear this may be the direction that all major software companies are going, Microsoft already is doing a program similar to Photoshop. Is the Nikon software easy to use?
Why do you think Photoshop is trying to put photographers out of business?
Capture NX2 is a great program.
Capture NX2 is quite a good program but I think the NIK suite would be a better option.
Capture NX2 was made for Nikon by NIK Software. Since Google bought out NIK software they announced that they will no longer support Capture NX2, so changes will be coming from Nikon concerning future releases of their Capture NX line of post processing software, likely before summer is over this year as the NX3 version was in the works when Google dropped the bomb.
I look for Corel to step up their software offerings to fill the upcoming Adobe void, but they do have to make a big step! This will likely mean a pretty substantial price increase also, but I feel they have the potential to make major inroads in this arena.
The Nik suite will not be able to do the basics like curves, exposure and such. Nx2 does a great job with adjustments and exposure and basic editing. I have used nx2 with everything from a D80 to aD800 so I think that it will be around for awhile not up in a cloud. No telling on what is happening with Nik which by the way has nothing to do directly with Nikon.

"NIK collection by Google logo Google will not support Capture NX
When Google acquired Nik Software, they did not purchase the Capture NX software and have no intentions of supporting it. This information was provided to a reader who contacted the Nik software division of Google. Capture NX ($135) was initially developed by Nik Software after Nikon invested in the company back in 2006. It remains to be seen who will take over the future development of Capture NX and when NX3 will be released.
After Google purchased Nik Software, they started selling the entire plugin collection for $149. Existing owners can download all plugins for free."

Adobe moving access to the "cloud"; to charge a steep monthly fee for access.

Why do you characterize it as 'a steep monthly fee'?
$10/month for CS, updated/bug fixed continuously is 'steep'?

The email I received states the CS package is $49.95 monthly when paid as a full year at a time. I find no $10 price.

I own CS6 and the only posted option is for $49.95 x 12 = $599.40.
That's higher than the annual upgrade price has been. I for one will NOT be amongst the clouds.

The $10 price is supposedly in there somewhere, and it's for the first year only, and only if you have CS3 or newer. I so, you can sign up for a year at $10/mo. Of course, when you drop it at the end of the year, your subscription software will no longer work.
Do you think that "$49.95 monthly when paid as a full year at a time," is payable all at once?

Then you aren't looking on the right place.

Again, the $49.95/mo is for EVERY Adobe product.
