While taking the pictures of the grass I put my hand into these, No mound, tiny (3-4mm)

These are actually larvae. If you look closely at "Egg rescue 2", you will see that ant & larva are practically face-to-face.
The ant in lower left corner is carrying an egg.

Good catch. My entomology teacher would have given me an F (Gym might too)
