Skeptical about lense

Considering buying Canon 28-300mm L series lense. Like long focal range. Reviews read heavy, which don't think will bother me. Anyone out there using this lense? Like it?
Pros/cons?

Ichabod,
Very heavy lens, but a good one. Do you have a monopod, if not and you want this lens buy one for sure. This lens is tack sharp when used correctly. If you don't mind what are you going to be shooting with it? Good luck

Thanks George. I have mono and tripod. I realize I probably will be using one of these. I was just interested how people who had this lense liked it. Thanks again

Well like I said it is a great lens, not a low light lens, not great for anything indoors or in poorly lit situations. Now outside in daylight you will get amazing sharp photos. Are you buying this new or used, again why are you buying it?

Buying for just all around lens. Somewhat lazy-don't like changing lens. I will definitely be using in low light.

Ichabod,
I do not recommend this lens for low light shooting, aperture is not large enough.

This lens is a "jack of all trades, master of none."

Yes, it has a very wide range of focal lengths, but at the sacrifice of image quality. It does not even come close to the 24-70 f/2.8L or the 70-200 f/2.8L, and both of those are a stop or two faster. Unless IS is important to you, you could buy both for about the same price as the 28-300.

Jerm,
Sorry but there is no way that he could buy both of those lenses for the same price as the 28-300, even used those two lenses are over 2K.

I have that one and I love it. Yes it is a bit heavy to handhold but with a tripod no problem.

It's within ~$125, NEW...

The 28-300L is currently ~$2550 at B&H.

The 24-70L is currently on sale for $1299 at B&H.
The 70-200 f/2.8L (non-IS) is currently $1376 at B&H.

There has been a lot of great comments made about the non "L" version of the lens. (@ one third the price)

Everyone, I love all the comments/discussions. I will definitely be buying L lense. To be truefull, it will be either be the 28-300 (just love the range) or 70-200 2.8. One thing I like about the 70-200, I can add an extender which my understanding I cannot use on 28-300.. Thanks again, but would like more comments!!!

I just bought my first "L". My next one will be the 70-200 f2.8. Do some research and decide whether or not you need the IS. MANY reviews I have read (pros too, not just consumers) have said the non IS is actually a little sharper than the IS version because of the extra glass (elements) needed for the IS. (Although I would guess most of us could not tell). But you will save $1000 that can go towards your next "L". For almost the same price as the IS, I could add the 24-70 "L" that I want. However, there are over 1000 reviews on B&H, with an average of 5 out of 5 stars.!!!

P.S. B&H has $200 of the IS version if you buy today!

At 3.7 pounds it will be a handful.
