Adobe "Leasing"

Adobe finally made the jump to full subscription, rather than downloading. They had previously eliminated manufacturing a physical product in favor of downloads, and now they have taken the next step. CS will cost you $50 a month. I wonder if that price will ever increase. :D

You will download the program, so you will be able to work offline. Adobe has made the decision for me: PS 6 was my last.

Here are some relevant links.

"Lease" price for Photoshop 6 is $20 a month. Total suite (many programs) is more.

Right. The Suite is $50, which is a good deal if you want to use all of their programs, and you make money from doing so.

They have too many prices!

Yes... $20/mo for one program, $50/mo for all of them. For me, though, LR4 and PE11 are all I need and they are paid-for...

It looks like they're trying to separate the pros from the amateurs.

Could be... I'm an amateur, for sure... And, consequently, my photography equipment and software needs are not "pro-level". I'm in it for fun, not profit...

Photoshop is the most pirated software in the world, makes sense that Adobe would want to be in the drivers seat.
I think the prices are very high though, $240 per year for how many years?

As I understand it... the software is downloaded to your computer. So, the program resides on your local hard drive. The monthly subscription entitles you to automatic updates to the software. If you end your subscription, the updates also end... But, the software remains on your system at the rev level at the time of the end of service.

So, if you use PS a lot, its probably worth it. At least for a year...

It looks like Adobe is leaving the door open for price increase. I contacted Adobe. If you have PS CS3 through PS CS6, you can get Photoshop CC for just $9 a month (annual commitment). However, this price is:

Promotional pricing for the first year

It may not be a bad deal to subscribe just for one year to get these new features. Then, if you want you can just cancel your subscription.

1. Camera shake reduction.
2. Smart sharpen tool.
3. Ability to use Camera Raw settings as filters.
4. Intelligent upsampling.
5. Multiple shape and path selection.
6. 3D features formerly only included in the Extended edition.

Or we could all join this petition.

Try $600 per year for the whole suite. I just posted the transcript of a chat with them on Chit-Chat:

Would you mind posting this link in a separate thread with a heading "Sign Petition Against Adobe Cloud Policy".

I've been leasing Photoshop for about 18 months now. Although the software remains on your system if you end your subscription, it won't work.

The software communicates with Adobe, and if you open the software and there's no connection, or there is a connection that says your subscription was terminated, the software also terminates.

A couple of weeks ago I had a debit card compromised, so I canceled it and got a new one. The old debit card paid my monthly subscription fee, and as soon as Adobe couldn't charge my subscription fee, the software no longer worked. Imagine that!.....lol

"Recurring Revenue" has been an oft repeated catch-phrase in the business world for several years now. Looking at it from that standpoint you can see how this business model would be attractive to Adobe, at least on the surface. The question now becomes, will this still be productive in the long term or will there be enough customers that have felt alienated and left Adobe to make an impact on the recurring revenue model. Only time will tell there.

What could really be interesting is how this will affect open source programs like GIMP and Paint.net. If enough of the right code writers start tweaking these open source programs Adobe could end up with more competition than they bargained for.

Adobe is making a big marketing mistake. It's products have always been top shelf. Over the past few years several other companies have become stronger in the product lines they offer. The content and features have in some cases actually are better or more easy to use that Adobe. This marketing decision appears to be made on something I call Greed. It is arrogant for them to think that they are the best and that no other company can or will offer what they can.
This decision will comeback to haunt them in lost sales.
It is the open door for all the other graphic software companies to jump in with new products at reasonable prices.
