Looking at a crane fly head-on

The last one illustrates well the halteres, or the rudimentary hind wings, that characterze the true flies, and more specifically the elongated version found in the crane flies.

Thanks Tom. I'm really trying to get better. I think a lot of any noticeable improvement has to do with the off camera flash and the larger diffuser.
