We will be staying in Jackson Hole so we plan on going to the Grand Tetons and plan to go to Yellowstone. I just got the book Yellowstone and the Tetons by Joseph Lang. While MT Shooter is still around any recommendations for shooting?

I'll suggest - spend a few nights IN Yellowstone - each night at a different lodge . . . at least 1 night at Old Faithful lodge. Jackson is probably an hour's drive from Yellowstone - a really nice, scenic drive.

Have a GREAT trip!

Hi sueyeisert, I suggest you don't follow the pattern used by most tourists (hurry, hurry, we've gotta get from here to here because there's no time). Instead, take your time and enjoy every moment. You'll never see it all in the amount of time you've probably allotted because you'll be covering hundreds of miles. The photo opportunities will present themselves to you if you just look for them.

get the Yellowstone brochure. the Falls are great. wildlife is prolific, carry glass, the wildlife is that, better to have long lens then annoy bears an bison. The thermal features lend themselves wonderfully to photography, I think this is one place you will utilize the majority of glass you pack, enjoy,

If you are at the Old Faithful Lodge get up about 6AM-very few people, you'll get a neat photo of the old yellow tour bus parked in front- time it right and Old Faithful will be erupting in the background. The buses are there to pick up people for photo tours, etc. Get there before the 7am boarding and you have some interesting images.
In the Grand Tetons the gentle raft trip down the river is scenic and you should see some wildlife if you go in the AM- avoid the high noon trips

Most of the comments are about Yellowstone which is a great place to visit. The Tetons are equally as awesome. I am attaching a map with the key places to visit. Things not to miss are sunrise at the Moulton Barns, Sunrise at Schwabacher Landing and Oxbow bend. There is also Mount Moran view across Jackson Lake and the view from signal mountain. A drive along Gros Ventre just outside of Jackson will almost garuntee that you will see a herd of Buffalo. I recommend all 15 places recommended on the map. Have a good time

If you want to try to experience something different, you can try to find a quiet place to sit along the edge of the West Thumb of the Yellowstone Lake between midnight and 5:00 am
and listen real hard. If you are lucky you might hear the eerie
and fantastically strange wailing sound that seems to come from somewhere on the lake. When I was a teenager, my two buddies and I were bound and determined to hear this sound.
On our first attempt the coyotes wouldn't shut up all night and we couldn't hear anything but their howling and yapping at each other. Two weeks later we tried again and about 2:00 am and again about 3:30 am we heard this strange wailing, moaning sound..very faint, then a little louder, and then faint, but very distinct lasting about 30 to 45 seconds. Evidently this has been ongoing for many years because Indian Legend claims the sounds are from the Great Spirit. We experienced this back in June of 1957. Scientific explanation is that it is geothermal pressure from the hot magma under ground responsible for the
"Great Spirit". Take a warm jacket and a thermos of hot coffee because it drops to the upper thirties or low forties during the night. Since it has been 56 years ago it would be hard to tell if the wailing spirit of the lake is still there.

If you want to see what is going on with the animals in Yellowstone 24/7 get the APP for your IPhone or Ipad
Yellowstone National Park Wildlife (YNP Wildlife) updated daily with current pictures of sightings, location, and times.
Was there last year for 5 days taking pictures used the APP for locations of the animals I wanted to photograph while I was there.

Certainly consider the travertine falls at Mammouth Hot Springs. Best photographed, in my opinion, just before sunrise or just after sunset (especially the lower part). There is so much white in the area that any sunlight will probably blow the top end out of your dynamic range.

Note that the falls are on the East side of a hill/mountain so they are mostly in shade some time before actual sunset.

As others say - TAKE YOUR TIME!

I'm pretty negative on Old Faithful in peak tourist season.

Try Lake Lodge. It was under renovation last fall and should be done by now.

Try the Wolf watchers. Take good quality glass and you will be amazed.
