I removed the background and replaced it, but I noticed that the background appears "blotchy" I guess is the best way to describe it. anyone got any suggestions on how to fix it

That, my friend, looks like digital noise.

Prior to copying/inserting your subjects onto the new background run the background thru a noise reduction plug-in such as Topaz DeNoise. It might soften the background somewhat (which is not the important part of the pic) but will, if done right, even out the night sky.

I also noticed that the left shoulder of the older woman isn't 100%. you can see the background thru her sholder.

Thanks for pointing out the shoulder, I had not noticed it before. I will try doing the DeNoise and see if it helps any.
Thanks

I think you will need to remove the noise in the background image before you cut it in. While you are woking on it get rid of the light area over the fist generations shoulder and the light spots over the should of the third generation so you have a totally black background with the exception of the dome.

How would I get rid of the light over the shoulder, I guess there is an easy why to correct the two flaws?

I would take a copy of the original background image and clone the dark sky down into the light areas. In this case it doesn't have to be fancy because most of the lower part of the background image will be covered by the people.

You need to go back to your original pic and re do your mask. If you used Topaz ReMask you have to pay attention to the edges and make sure you got all of what you intended and didn't get some creep of the cut background bleeding in. Don't know how you masked the original pic but it appears that you lost a percentage of her shoulder and that is why your background is beeding through.
