Personally I find this image refreshingly pleasing. What ever techniques you used, I think you may have stumbled on to something. Really good image Colin, I love it

You're photo looks fine to me. To get the blue ski effect you need to swap channels (red & blue) in photoshop. If you go to http://www.kolarivision.com there are tutorials and photoshop actions you can use. Also if you go to http://www.lifepixel.com there are tutorials there.

You must be doing something wrong.

In the channel mixer you must select the output channel as red and put the red at 0 and blue at 100. Then change the output channel to blue change blue to 0 and red to 100.

I use raw therapee for ir. Each individual channel has 3 sliders.
In red, there is a red, green and blue slider. In green there is a red, green and blue slider. In blue it also has a red, green and blue slider.
In the red channel, I slide the red slider to 0 and the blue slider to 100. In the blue channel, I slide the red to 100 and the blue to 0. For me the changes made in the green channel aren't appealing at all, and you won't get any thing green in the foliage.

I would like to play with the first shot in your post if I may. (I don't want to try without your permission)

I swapped the red and blue channels and changed the WB with the eyedropper and clicked on the lightest area in the snow drift. This is my favorite look for IR.
(I used Raw Therapee, a free download. Oddly it doesn't support RAW, only jpg, tiff etc.)
Thanks for letting me give it a try. Hope you like it.
