colnago has graciously volunteered their WPC 1317 - Arbor Day entry for critique and analysis to find out what they could have done to make it better. Be nice, but be honest as this will help everyone with their craft. Thank you colnago and thank you everyone!

From the Ancient Bristle Cone Pine Forest
I think this is an excellent Photo. Exposure, contrast and tonal graduations are all very good. It makes you want to stroke that twisted wood.
The only thing I have slight reservations about is the rather large amount of bland sky, I presume it was all blue, pity there were no clouds about to add more interest. Maybe if the sides were cropped about 0.5 " off the left and 1" off the right it would cut down that comparatively large area.
The subject is almost emanating a magical and mystical aura, photographers
will go a lifetime and never have such an incredible opportunity.
The tones of B & W are great, this is BW photo no doubt. The one thing I would have done differently would be to shoot it at a ' landscape ' presentation, this would present a opposite perspective to the vertical subject, it would also add a more dramatic view of the subject in its surroundings. I believe the photo is too confiding with its borders, the subject deserves and I believe dictates more space to display its hypnotic beauty.
This is my humble opinion, thank you for the privilege of commenting.

I agree that it is a great photo, but I like the sky the way it is. In my opinion, interesting clouds would detract from that awesome tree.
Wonderful photo of an amazing tree. Maybe a little highlighting to brighten the tree up some.... but really beautiful the way it is.

On reflection, I think you are right, The plain sky adds to the overall tone of the picture rather than detract from it. So i would say it is as perfect a shot as you are likely to see. I only wish that I could do as well :)
Thank you every one for your comments and analysis. This is one of my favorite location. Takes a bit of an effort to get there but the reward can be worth the trouble. I'm adding an other "old" tree from the location.
Another Ancient tree
WOW! Just beautiful. You have captured the essence of these old trees.

I like both pictures, I really liked the B&W but the color is more alive, I understand the Bristlecone is usually over 4,000 years old. I got some pictures of them in southern Utah, Cedar Breaks National Monument, a long time ago.
