Really great series! The subject/background separation on the first three images is outstanding. This is another element I would like to incorporate into images. Is there a "rule of thumb" for lens size, aperature & subject distance that you use to achieve this affect?

I primarily use a 500mm lens, so the depth of field is extremely shallow to start with. I rarely shoot above f/8 which also helps (unless I am photographing birds in flight against a bare sky .... then I will expand to f/11 or f/16)

There are several depth of field calculators and "rules" on the internet.... I simply use what works for me and the setup in my hands at the time.

Thanks for the reply. I've been picking up a lot of very useful info from the BIF/BOW members. I have several DOF charts that I have printed out plus many notes. Now to put it all together. Thanks again.
