Stellar! It's one insect, I hope I don't find. Used to have them at my prior place. Ours were as black as my coffee....

It's usually the black one that invades houses. The red carpenter ant is also very common, but is not considered a serious pest.

P.S. There are several 'red' species. This one -I think - is Camponotus castaneus.

What's the size of the red ones? Our black ones were about 1/2" in size.... Only bigger ants I've seen were in Costa Rica... about 3/4" in size. The nature guide we had, got one to grab a stick 18" in length and the jaws could hold the stick's weight....

Wow, Douglass, I have no idea. I just twist the focus to get the size I want then push the shutter. These were taken with the 100mm Canon without tubes, and a Raynox 250. I think everything was maxed out, or fairly close to it.

They are roughly the same size as the larger workers of C. pennsylvanica, the black one. Carpenter ants have several different sizes of workers within the same colony.

I was re-habbing a bedroom and was pulling off a sheet of wall board. Saw that the cavity was chock full of large Carpenter ants. Carefully put it back & drove to the hardware store for a can of "spray death"....
