I'm stumped. I think it's a variation of some kind Finch, but I can't find it anywhere. I'm almost certain it is not a jay. It has a finch's beak. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. However, I enjoyed the challenge. Nice photo, by the way. Seamus

Doubt if it's a Gray Jay. Up here it's also called a Whiskey Jack. See a lot of them while Moose hunting. I don't think they travel around California.

They're carnivorous, so watch your burgers when venturing out in the bush... :D
And they're brave... will come and sit on your shoulder waiting for hand outs.

Gray Jay, Canadian Jay and whiskey jack are all same thing.

The beak threw me also, but the markings are dead on Gray Jay. I am going with the angle on the beak throws it off, he also looks too thin...

You might be right, but I've never seen a Gray Jay with that white stripe on their wings. Our Jays are gray with a white bottom.

I'm sorry everybody, but I'm pretty sure this "Lady" is a Finch. I uploaded a photo of a Gray Jay. Please notice the beak and the wing bars. Seamus

Sounds good to me, conviction sells... a specific kind of finch...?
