From my archives (July 2007)...This is really a flightless Female Wasp, even though it's also known as a "Velvet Ant"...Common down here in the South. You don't want to get stung by one (ergo the "Cow Killer" nickname) & they are difficult to squish as their exoskeletons are so hard
did you cool it down? these just dont stop and are hard to shoot.nice shots.
No, I didn't cool it down. I put it in a container & it crawled around the lip of it for awhile... It was all I could do to simply pre focus on a section of the rim & wait for it to come around ...

i was given my 1st dslr in 2009
My first DSLR was in late 2005/early 2006 (Nikon D70s)....Prior to that I had a Nikon Coolpix 8700 8mp bridge camera...Had a Coolpix 4300 (4mp) before that & on old RCA CDS 6300 2.3mp point & shoot prior to the 4300...I've been shooting digital since 2002... Currently have my old D70s, a D300 & a D7100 DSLR's. Then I've got a Sigma DP2s, CanonPowershot SX100IS, Fujifilm Finepix AX (16mp), Olympus u840 plus several other smaller mp size point & shoots...Don't even ask about film cameras...
Love the way you out smarted the wasp to get your shot
