I'm trying to improve my technique in black and white. There is a competition later this month for black and white photos at my local camera club. I'm worried about things like contrast, clarity, hot spots, and artifacts. Any critique is welcome and any tips on improving my technique are also appreciated. PP was done in lightroom 4. Thanks.... The last photo, of course, is not in black and white; but I thought it was interesting to see emerging spring foliage with backlighting. I think the background is too busy; but my wife likes it the way it is.

These are well done. The last is most interesting and I applaud you trying different approaches.
Good luck in the competition
