I was trying to respond right there in your topic, but I did not have the usual buttons (ex: REPLY etc). I was reading your topic and I agree to a point. You're surely talking about the big boys here ( and I agree, a solid tripod and a gimbal are best for them), but if you're shooting with something small and very light (Canon 400/f5.6) you can have that hanging around your neck all day, or hold it up in your hands all day and never feel the weight(well there is none) and you can always (almost) hit your target.

Yes, I am a great enthusiast for hand holding your camera for Birds in Flight. It is especially easy with the lighter lenses and I often break out my 100-400 zoom just for that. Your excellent photos are fine examples of that.

My point was that there are times when a tripod makes sense, especially when using a long, heavy lens or are faced with a situation where the birds are in a predictable pattern. Thanks for responding!

birdpix,

I agree with your point 100%

" My point was that there are times when a tripod makes sense, especially when using a long, heavy lens or are faced with a situation where the birds are in a predictable pattern."

I use my tripod and gimbal to hold my 100-400 in the dead of winter when shooting out over rivers at eagles feeding.

When there is no activity the mittens are back on and the camera is on the gimbal standing by!

where i go, lugging a tripod round is just extra weight all my pics are hand held and my lens is either the 100/300 or the 100/400 as i also take pics of butterflies moths and anything else that interests me,I take a lot of pics so of course i also get failures but hopefully more keepers.
