I've been using Dropbox for awhile and I wanted a place to keep My Docs in sync. So I copied them to Dropbox. When I make changes to a document I thought it would automatically update it in Dropbox too. That is not the case. Any tips for me would help?

Hi

I use Dropbox for all manor of documents and sync between PC/pad/phone/and also temp machines in the office

The trick is to use the Dropbox a/c as the master folder for all items you want synced so that it updates each folder you have on individual prices of tech - if it is to be used as back up only I believe you need to replace it in the Dropbox file and keep it in "my docs"

If you update the PC doc (and don't replace the drop box one nothing updates as there is no link on the machine to Dropbox)

I find it excellent especially for very large docs - the only issue I have is I cannot move an entire folder at once - need to creat a folder on Dropbox and then copy all the files across

Also forgot to say - it is excellent for sharing individual docs with other Dropbox a/c holders

Best Wishes

Karl

I open the Dropbox folder on my PC and copy the amended document over to the folder. A message pops up asking me if I want to replace the document of the same name. I choose replace and the new document is in place. The old is gone.

If you want to keep the non-amended documents in dropbox simply rename the amended document before you save.

If you're doing documents, Google Drive is pretty excellent.

I believe what you want to do is use symbolic links in a Dropbox folder, that way when you update a file on your computer it also links with the dropbox file and updates

I use DropBox all the time, and have never had it NOT sync a file, regardless of what kind of file it is. My guess is that you need to delve into the settings and make sure it is syncing the folders you want to sync.

Maybe I don't have it set up right. Do I just copy the files from My Documents to a Dropbox folder?

Keep the Master Document in the DropBox folder on your computer. The DropBox folder will be your working folder. Then everything will sink because the updated document will be in the DropBox folder.

ok So I put a file into my Dropbox folder, modified it, and saved it in the Dropbox folder. It did not sync with the same My Documents file on my computer, however.

If you want to use DropBox your document will have to find a new home in DropBox. When finished updating you can always copy it into your My Documents folder but while you are working on it it should stay in DropBox. I had the same problem until I realized that it made no difference where I worked on the file.

I guess I'm not understanding. If I copy it to My Documents from Dropbox there is no automatic syncing involved.

Do a Google search on this. It might be the only way you can get DropBox to backward sync to the original file in My Documents. I have never tried this but I did Google it. It seems like a pain when it's so easy to copy the finished file back into My Documents when you are through working on it.

Yes, it syncs to all of your devices. No it does not sink to the original file in My Documents.
