Somebody once accused me of being lurker, because he could not find any images I had uploaded to any galleries.

Damn Right, and here's why:

Privacy and Security of my work

UK just passed a law extending ownership of pics on Instagram (and I gather) to EVERYONE.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/04/29/err_act_landgrab/

Other than examples on posts, I typically have not posted gallery images on ANY web site, social media, blog or other forum for over a decade.

Who's Next... What Country... What types of sites, outside social media. It looks like politicians have already targeted social media.

Interesting in light of the Boston Bombings. If politicians succeed in clamping down on image posting and protection posters rights to privacy and security, posting may drop off. Without all the media input from people who were at the finish line in Boston, could it have taken longer to round up and kill/capture the perpetrators.

And if you are not a bit concerned about this, there is the "Rule of Paranoia"

"Just because you are paranoid, don't think they're not out to get you."

Then there is the First Corollary to the "Rule of Paranoia" which states:

"Just because you are NOT paranoid, still does not mean they're not out to get you."

Ol' Frank Loc: Orlando,

I wonder how many photos were taken at the Boston Marathon by cameras, cell phone, i-pads, security cameras and whatever. Must be a million. The govt. would not have identified the suspects without civilian help. I want the politicians stop all this policial correctness struff and let us do what we do best.

At least in the U.S. there is no queston: you own your pictures.

But you can't stop people from downloading anything you post so if it bothers you then you are on the right track.

As you can see from below it doesn't matter to me.

Ah Yes. As they say...

"Stealing your sh_t is the highest form of flattery!"

The only thing worse than someone stealing your stuff is giving it away to any taker who'll have it.

MtnMan how come you're in hiding? Is there a reason for this?

You may own your pictures and live in the US but how are you going to stop someone in say, Ponorogo, from stealing and using your picture for their own gains.
The fact is, if you put it on the Internet in any fashion, to someone it's fair game. Sad but true.
If you don't want to see another take the credit for your work don't put on the Internet - simple.
But in reality, with the billions of photographs 'out there', what's the chances of anyone picking yours. More chance of winning the lottery on a double rollover week I think.

Because..."It's mine! It's mine! and you can't have it! They want to share, but only on their terms. not gonna happen. Besides, if anyone thinks that the world's govts. are not going to try to regulate the internet, they are deluded. When young people with smartphones and internet can topple governments-see Egypt-it's silly to think that even the USA is not thinking about how they can regulate it without seeming too Orwellian. And that includes both parties.

Kuzano, you may have food for thought. I dont say we should get paranoid and start running around the streets screaming. But no matter where you post your pictures, or how, someone will be there to hack it and either use it for personal use or try to sell the image...That cannot be stopped. But.........in the case of some of these posting blogs, like flickr, (i dont know of many other ones) the date the image was posted could prove proprietary ownership and thus the true owner can collect any money the usurper got.
I also feel that if someone is so cheap that he has to resort to stealing my images because he cant get his own, then take it, I cant stop that person. I just hope when he frames the picture, he remembers where he got it and thanks me.

WoW - talk about paranoid - 600,000,000 photos taken every day and you worry about yours being worth so darn much and being so original that it is the only one - like a finger print.
Heck just a few days ago I saw a photo that looked just like one I had taken & I mean exactly like mine but does that mean that someone else had not been as fortunate as myself to catch that wonderful scene.

You're nuts get a life. Who do you think you are Ansel Adams. There are tons of pictures posted on many different sites on the internet everyday. If someone copies one of yours and becomes rich and famous from you'll have the original with the metadata to show you are the original photographer. Chill out!

I'm 70 years old and not in this for money, so if I take a photo worth sharing and somebody wants it then that's what it's meant for. Hope it makes them happy.

My "nuts" are fine. I treat them well and they have served me faithfully for many years.

And yes, I do consider myself an accomplished photographer, quite on the order of Ansel.

And you, and Jerryg have just displayed your endorsement of plagiarism, and outright theft. One of the considerations of ownership is that if you don't want your sh_t stolen, don't leave it on the front porch.

If you can't make the connection, the "porch" is blindly posting "stuff" on the internet. If you are not concerned about your "stuff" you do not regard it highly....

OH YES, and one other thing...

Why are you so concerned about where MtnMan lives? Are you writing his biography, or are you going after him for one of HIS posts. My presumption would be "He lives in the mountains". If he does live in the mountains and is a mountain man, I don't want to cross him in any way, regardless of what I think of his posts.

Having lived just south of the Canadian border in Northern Idaho (can you say Ruby Ridge?) and in Wyoming and Montana, I respect mountain men in all their iterations.... skinheads, Aryan Brotherhood, Rednecks, Posse Cometatis, and just plain Mountain Men as I suspect our MtnMan is.

I never saw a skinhead, Aryan Brother, Redneck, or Posse Cometatis member packing a sophisticated camera... usually just handguns, concealed or otherwise, and Assault Rifles. And I don't think there is an ice cube's chance in hell of law enforcement, ATF or any other gummint enterprise going up there and disarming them.

Enjoy the forum. It's here for everybody and everybody's opinion. I don't think much of yours, to say the least.
