As a proud, native Kentuckian, I feel the need to apologize to those from out of state coming to the Kentucky Derby. Most Kentuckians have more sense than this.

Thanks for this info Bruce. I hope this isn't a sign of things to come for good people who enjoy a fun creative hobby.

Are pressure cookers also banned? It was my understanding that no camera was used in the bombings in Boston!

The new norm? Banning interchangeable lens cameras will be an effective tool in fighting terrorism? I apparently was under the mistaken impression that following the events at the Boston Marathon, the authorities wanted to see ANY and ALL images in their early efforts to identify the
bomber(s). Perhaps they had too much material shared and needing review to do the job and want to cut down on potential leads to sift through in the future? Perhaps the new buzzwords in Congress will be Camera Control...sorry, Gun Control, you'll have to take a back seat now.

Now that I think about it, wasn't it because of capturing images of the bombers that authorities were able to find them so quickly? Shouldn't we encourage photography rather than limit it?

Brucewells, I recently came across the same sign at the "Circuit of The Americas" track in Austin, Tx for the MotoGP race. However, they did not enforce it. Another way around it is to take only the camera with one lens attached. If they see extra lens, then they might give one a little grief about it.

One way to stop nonsense like this is not attend these events. No attendance = not revenue.

There was a recent rule passed for a local event held on Fridays that prohibits backpacks. The irony is this event allows the consumption of alcohol which requires the police to be on hand and the location of this event is two blocks from the police station.

What is the one common denominator in all terrorist activities? It's not box cutters, it's not knives, it's not guns, it's not explosives, it's not cars, it's not pressure cookers and it's certainly not interchangeable lens cameras. What is common to ALL terrorist events is people. Why not just ban all people from attending? That should serve to cut down on the threat itself as well as eliminate most of the motivation behind the threat.

I fail to see where banning interchangeable lens cameras will heighten security in any possible manner. The only effect it might have, at least for the public in general, is that it would increase the amount of time it would take to enter the grounds as security officers would need to thoroughly check out each and every camera. I see only delays and frustrations. No effective security enhancement.

Makes me wonder....are FREEDOM loving Americans winning the battle...or are the terrorists?

Right on Bridges. Photographs of the bombers in the crowd provided clear pictures that led to the positive ID of these two.

I suppose they cover this stupidity by saying, "Better safe than sorry." Are the guards going to be checking bridge cameras to make sure their lenses are not removable?

So, after consulting with "several law enforcement authorities," they decided to ban cameras? Remember Forrest Gump? "Stupid is as stupid does."

Here's the complete list.

1) Coolers (Styrofoam coolers and ice will be available for purchase infield)
2) Cans, glass bottles or containers
3) Camcorders
4) Cameras with detachable lenses
5) Cameras with lenses more than six inches in length
6) Tripods
7) Purses larger than 12 inches in any dimension
8) Pop up and patron tents, no poles or stakes of any kind
9) Grills
10) Alcoholic beverages
11) Thermoses
12) Backpacks
13) Luggage (includes briefcases)
14) Duffel bags
15) Wagons
16) Umbrellas
17) Weapons (including knives)
18) Fireworks
19) Noisemakers and air horns
20) Laser lights and pointers
21) Mace, pepper spray or other personal defense sprays

#19 is "Noisemakers," but that could be a problem. If you are bringing in a diaper bag, you must have a small child with you (a noisemaker). :D

I think next year, all attendees should be naked and carrying nothing.

I'm with dualimages, just ban people and nothing can go wrong.
So let's say someone brings Ricin and disperses it downwind, good thing no one got a photograph.

WE are starting to go way overboard with banning things. So lets just ban people and put the event on TV. So without paying customers pretty soon the event will be no more.

Some of these are for security purposes, but some have to do with copyright issues. You have 't been able to bring DSLR's to concerts for years.
