Can you change the DSC prefix (Nikon)

Apparently not on the D5000 but was hoping someone had a hack for this.
My camera rolled around and is starting again from DSC_0001.
I sort my photos into categories but it is an inevitable event that some file numbers will be the same for the flowers category.

Eventually there will be duplicate file names and when I roll over again it could be disaster(How many DSC_0001's can you have without disrupting the universe).

I do have the luxury of having an Apache server with virtual hosts, I CAN run a script to copy the files from my SD card and transfer to my external HD and do a replace on DSC to DSD but it seems like there should be a better way.
I do major web development and a PHP script is an option.

Any and all input is welcome as I would prefer to change the DSC prefix in camera.
Cheers,
Loren

On download I normally change the script, this helps keep them sorted. Sadly, I think this is your only option but am all ears for anything better..

Using most ingest software, you should be able to change the whole string of name and number as the images are uploaded to the computer. I never see the DSC_ prefix as I name the files as they hit the hard drive.

If I took your portrait today, the filename would be 130428-lorenww-###.NEF

Those images would be in a folder: 20130428-LorenWW

In some Nikon menu's you can change this in the 'shooting' menu.

The software Nikon provides with the camera, ViewNX, allows a revision of the file name. The D700 has a feature to revise the file name, as well.

Since ViewNX runs on the computer, it really doesn't matter what the file name is on the SD card. It can be revised at the time of transferring it.

Light Room also has a feature that will change the file name when pictures are imported to your computer.

For the D7000 there is an option to change the prefix somewhere in the camera's menu. After I used up DSC I changed it to DSD.

I did read that some cameras had that option under the shooting menu but the only option Is have is to create a new folder.
I don't use any software for importing, just eject the card and slide it into my computer's card reader and move them by hand.

You have some good suggestions and will look into them.
Thanks, That's why I love the Hog.

Hello everyone. I am new to this blog but not new to photograghy. I have been doing it since 1969. Only been digital for about five or six years. As for as this question, in the shooting menu on the D7000 there is the file naming option where you can change the dsc. I use this option to indicate which camera body I am shooting with just in case I notice a recurring problem in my photos.
