Glass blowing

Has anyone had any experience shooting glass making/blowing? I am about to document an art object being created as an award for an organization's convention. My meter is being shiped off for repair, but I only have a short window to shoot this object being made by the artist. My plan is to shoot some test shots of other work being done. These pictures will be presented along with the artwork. Thanks for any advice.

Hi Daplight,
Watch out for the flame throwing your camera metering off. the flame and glowing glass will be bright. You may want to use a fast shutter speed and bracket the shoot.

If you want to eliminate the brilliant yellow flame in glassblowing you can use a neodymium-praseodymium (didymium) filter. Glassblowers use them to see what they are doing and I used these to take photos of scientific glassblowing methods when I was in college. They are also used in astrophotography to produce a color shift toward the red. Hoya has didymium filters for Nikons.

So Arthur, what are you shooting these days? I shoot Canon and it handles glass blowing just fine. I took this in Costa Rica in March. This is where digital shines. Take an image and look at it, then make corrections as needed. J. Goffe

I used manual mode. Put the view finder meter in the center and the pics came out good. For some reason I can't attach them to this reply
