He that plants trees loves others beside himself. -- Thomas Fuller
He that plants trees loves others beside himself. ...

Delicate Balance. When I think of Earth Day, trees and plants always come to mind - recycling, greenhouse effect, etc. This is a light-painting of a Serrano ( chili pepper plant ), soon to be planted in my garden, with a toy "earth", suspended by fishing line. D800, Nikkor f/2.8 24-70mm, 5 second exposure at f/11, ISO 250.

Our Earth - Their Future... please handle with care. Happy Earth Day!
Our Earth - Their Future... please handle with car...

To me, this scene from Cannon Beach, Oregon, epitomizes Earth Day. Beauty such as this can be so easily negated by littering and pollution, and I think that it behooves each of us to ensure that the beauty of our earth is both appreciated and protected - from ourselves, our earth's worst enemy.

An interview with abby

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I learned photography from my mother when I was in high school. My first film cameras were a a Pentax Spotmatic and then a Nikon FM1

2) Have you had any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I have had no formal training and like landscape, street photography, stills, architectural and a bit of studio work ( my "studio" is a small room in my house ).

3) What inspired you to take your winning shot?
I try to follow the theme each week and felt as though a small plant with the "earth" in the background would be nice for Earth Day.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
The plant was resting on a dark piece of plexiglass and the toy earth was suspended by a piece of fine fishing line. Black velvet material was used as the background and then I used a flashlight to "paint" the plant and earth for several seconds. I used a tripod, cable release and mirror-up function on a D800, f/2.8 24-70mm lens. F/22, ISO 250.

5) Would you change anything if you could do it again?
I would try to find a more realistic "earth". I bought the toy earth at Michael's Arts and Crafts here in Tampa.

6) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Boating and fishing.

7) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?

Thank you very much

Wow! I'm almost speechless - what an honor! And before I say a word about myself, I want to thank you, Steve, for starting and maintaining this Weekly Challenge. I've learned so much from it - and you have done an admirable job of managing it! You have the patience of Job!

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
The itch to photograph has been in me since I was a kid, but it was the camera my husband gave me for Christmas two years ago, that the passion for learning the art of photography was ignited. It was shortly after a family tragedy and that little micro four thirds camera helped me focus on capturing the incredible beauty around us in life and to let go of some of the pain.

2) Have you had any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
My formal training is Ugly Hedgehog, every morning over coffee before work . I also am addicted to reading books on photography. My current favorite, which I'm working through chapter by chapter is Roberto Valenzuela's "Picture Perfect Practice".

3) What inspired you to take your winning shot?
Your Weekly Challenge inspired me! I wanted to capture the concept of our earth's future being in our hands and fortunately I had cooperative models, if only briefly!

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
I used my awesome GH3, which is Panasonic's new "pro-sumer" micro 4/3's, with the Panasonic f2.8 35-100mm lens (equivalent to a 70-200mm lens), and off camera flash behind the models to help separate them from all the background vegetation.

5) Would you change anything if you could do it again?
I would have liked to have played with the flash placement more, but I had just a short window of opportunity with my underpaid and over-active models. I had another nearby setting in mind for the shot, where the shade was more even, but the kids saw the tree, ran to it, climbed up onto a branch, and so I went with their choice - their smiles reflect their delight in being up in the tree and with promoting Earth Day!

6) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Wow, that is a hard one, since my camera is my most favorite earthly possession. I guess I would have a little more time to do what I am doing now through my non-profit, which establishes and sustains neighborhood-based learning centers in low-income neighborhoods to empower at-risk children and their families to thrive.

7) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
I have a few sets up on flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/kerry_freeman/sets

An interview with ophart

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I've been taking photographs since I was about 12 years old (1954); got started by my dad with an old Kodak Vigilante bellows camera.

2) Have you had any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
No formal training. Primarily landscapes, seascapes, and other nature shots

3) What inspired you to take your winning shot?
I had seen Cannon Beach in the daytime, and went back three times to shoot it at sunset, only to have marine layer (ocean fog) roll in in late afternoon all 3 times; the 4th time I tried, it all came together.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
Canon 50D, 24-105 USM LIS lens, polarizing filter, Manfrotto tripod, Really Right Stuff ball head, no other gear

5) Would you change anything if you could do it again?
Not really, no.

6) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
I have no idea.

An interview with pinkycat

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I have been passionate about photography since the fall of 2011. I had gone through a life-changing experience and found that photography was a great creative outlet that helped me through uncharted territory.

2) Have you had any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I'm basically self-taught. A few online courses, but nothing formal. And of course, being able to tap into the vast resources here at the Hog.

3) What inspired you to take your winning shot?
I go to the Cherry Blossom Festival here in NJ every year. This year I was recovering from an illness, but wasn't going to miss out. So I went early morning when things were quiet. It's hard to believe so much beauty is literally a few blocks of way from Newark, NJ. It was so tranquil. I had to capture the moment.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
I took this shot with my Canon T3 and a 70-300mm lens on a tripod.

5) Would you change anything if you could do it again?
I don't think so. I might have considered having a subject sit in the bench reading a book or a parent and a small child strolling in the distance.

6) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
I would work with shelter animals.
