JR - I wish I could talk to you directly. I've never participated in an online forum like this before registering on UHH. Facebook is close, but not the same where I've observed the crowd on UHH is a mix of absolute complete strangers from different geographies, ages and levels of camera / computer and overall technology experience. They have different time commitments too in that some people can spend a lot of time scanning and responding while others visit only in spurts spread over days / weeks.

You have a lot of really good comments / input. I see you being helpful all the time. But, that credibility is seriously dissipated with the occasional curt remarks, particularly when directed at those with less experience.

There's a lot of times when just not responding is the better / best way. I've seen you involved in a few firefights that your actions seemed to have started. You'll know the specifics and can judge best if my observation is even accurate. My viewpoint is based on things I've observed over the past several weeks. I've noticed you've included a few recent comments in discussions along the lines (I'm paraphrasing your comment here): If I'd said that, I would have been flamed.

If you're just joking with something like Is this Main Photography discussion ? or "general "CHIT CHAT" discussion , you should include an emoticon to help everyone see the tongue in cheek.

But, if you're not joking and you don't like the people pushing back, then you need to take responsibility for needing to think before you type.

I saw a few comments / counter comments about dyslexia. I'm with you on the trouble typing and the time needed to write something longer than 'read the manual' when RTM is really all that needs to be done by the poster. I've also observed you're computer savvy; and therefore, you could save off a file with 'better worded responses'. Examples (customize to your specifics):

EX1 - I don't own that specific model, but I've had success going to the Nikon wedsite and downloading to my computer a PDF copy of the manual. It's much easier to text search the electronic document than to page through the printed index.

EX2 - I'm remembering that topic was discussed here in UHH. Try the search function at the top of this page and just type key words from your question in the search box <repeat question> and see if the results give you something that helps.

EX3 - You'll get personal comments and many well informed opinions here in UHH, but the entire knowledge base of the Internet is available when you type the same question into Google.

I'm only partially serious about having a ready file of responses. In seriousness, you can use a text editor like Word to edit a longer response including syntax and spell check and then just cut n paste the results into the reply box in UGG. That's how I created this message.

I'm not trying to call you out and I think if we could see each other's eyes, you'd see I'm trying to be sincere and helpful as I don't think you've tried to be hurtful. I do think some of the people responding back see you as trying to be hurtful and they're responding based on what they think they see you doing.

Let me take an example that generated this thought in my mind yesterday morning. I noticed your comment 'need fil flash' on the prom pictures. The comment made me cringe. I thought the exact same thing about the pictures which is why I really think we'd understand each other in person rather than email. But no matter how spot on the comment, no one posting those pictures nor the crowd admiring the life event of the parents / child will appreciate your critique. Because there is no delete option and the edit window for updating / retracting is so short, your wet towel of a response on this life event is just going to lay out there forever....Contrast your comment with those PhotonPhysicist made immediately below yours.

Really, if you'll just tone it down or couch a criticism in something positive, I've got to believe you'll see a difference. Think about it: there's a whole world of people sitting in different time zones, different continents, using different computers, at different ages, at different levels of experience. You're not going to change the world nor even the crowd on a forum like this. The frequency of your comments tells me you enjoy this forum and spend a healthy amount of time. Why keep up with the negative / perceived negative comments when you can just say nothing at all to the dumb questions / weak pictures? Let other people fill that role and watch them get shot full of arrows instead....

You don't have to respond. I just wanted to say something privately and in a spirit of friendship to see if I can interest you in some ideas.

To be honest I am surprised there are not more fights, etc. on sites like this with all of our different personalities to include our cultural norms and language differences. When I travel I was made aware that certain finger gestures in the US are not appropriate in other countries and do not even get me started on how some words translate. One of the most interesting and seriously annoying things I have observed though are how some cultures treat others where for some pushing your way to the front of a line is expected or for others not looking you in the eye. Do I think we all need to 'Just Get Along' sure, but it is more than that. Remember why you are here - to ask questions, to share and to learn. If you cannot live by that then find somewhere else where you are happy, but please do not think everyone is going to be on your side all the time. People have good days and bad and even when good they may express themselves in a way you do not understand and therefore you take it the wrong way. Listen to everyone, learn from them if you can and ignore the rest. Cheers!

JR, I'm confused. The post is signed by a Paul Sager, but looking at his avatar, it seems you made the initial post, (about yourself?).

No, it looks that way, don't know why but I didn't, is it something to do with the fact that I replied to him then copied it to here

Yes, I guess that would do it. To me it reads as if he started the thread with your avatar somehow.
Cheers mate.
