Martin: I'm not sure how reasonable this is. I think I paid around $100 for it. The knob on top operates the forward movement and the one on the bottom for the side-to-side adjustment. Out of the box, both knobs were on the same ("bottom") side. It's a simple change with a couple set-screws to flip it. I use my left hand to adjust the rail-- and the two knobs were too close together anyway. It's a Velbon....

Actually I am headed up to Gainesville tonight to spend a few days with my son, he has a retired entomologist coming over to set up bug attracting contraption, I guess it is a white sheet with some lights shining on it, that bugs will come and hangout on... we'll see how that goes. Sounds kinda cool, I never thought of doing something like that but it may produce some interesting shots. I have never shot too much at night because of the lack of light for focusing, but with a lit white sheet it sounds like it will work.

Beautiful series.

Can you recommend a tutorial on hand stacking? I would love to give it a try.

Try YouTube as I never watched any other than How to use the Software. Basically set/fix your focus, take a shot, move in a Fraction of an inch, take another shot, and repeat until stack is complete. If using flash, make sure fresh batteries. If you are using a 100mm macro lens, don't start at 1:1, pull the focusing back till your comfortable and then try. The closer/higher the magnification the harder to hand-hold. Make sure no wind is blowing if your outside. You might want to try tripod first to see how it works if you haven't tried this already.

Thanks, fstop22. I have never tried this before, but your images are motivating.
