Desert Locusts can swarm up to 80 million strong, and cover an area of up to 40 miles. This one was about 1 inch long. If you look at the head shot, you can see how big its mouth is: no wonder they eat everything they see.

Elie, It was only one, and I placed it on a flower on my kitchen table. I went to the Pet shop, and they gave it to me. They sell them to people to feed to their pet snakes, etc. But since locusts are not indigenous to England, they warned me that if I didn't have a pet snake (which I don't) then I must on no account let it go after it had its' portrait taken. I put it in my fridge to slow it down, as they jump a long way very quickly, but I'm afraid I left it too long, and it was on it's way out when I put in on the flower. Probably just as well, as I would not have known what to do with it afterwards. I hope nobody is going to jump on me on behalf of one locust: normally I am very careful to replace garden and other "critters" I find. If it helps, the Pet shop told me that locusts don't have a central nervous system, which is why people can feed them live to their snakes - the locusts don't feel anything.
Terrific shots Sarah, what a creature.

Thanks GWR100. It's quite horrible, isn't it!
