Try a smaller, older card. If that does not work you may have some bent pins inside the body. The Kingston 16GB CF cards had issues, both of mine were replaced by Kingston at no charge.

The following is an extract from a Nikon paper regarding CF cards

What CF cards have been tested for use in the D2Xs?

D2Xs Tested and Approved memory cards

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nikon has tested the following cards and approved their use in the D2Xs Digital SLR.

SanDisk SDCFB series 128 MB, 256 MB, 384 MB, 512 MB, 1 GB, 2GB, 4GB
SanDisk SDCFB (Type II) 300 MB
Sandisk SDCF2B (Type II) 256 MB
Sandisk SDCFH (Ultra II) 256 MB, 512 MB, 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB
Sandisk SDCFX (Extreme III) 1GB, 2GB, 4GB

Lexar Entry-level Compact Flash cards: 128MB, 256MB, 512MB
Lexar High Speed 40X with Write Acceleration* (WA): 256MB, 512MB, 1GB
Lexar Professional 40X with WA: 8GB
Lexar Professional 80X with WA and LockTight technology: 512MB, 2GB

Microdrive: 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 6GB

Other brands and capacities of cards may work, but Nikon cannot guarantee their operation. Check with the manufacturer of the third-party card for compatibility information. Nikon recommends keeping one of the approved cards available for troubleshooting.

*Lexar Media Write Acceleration (WA) Compact Flash cards are supported in Write Acceleration mode.
