I use Canon XSI . I am looking for low light-fast IS lens . I looked at 28-135mm - reviews -not recommended for this camera Considering 24-105 Or maybe 15mm-85mm. I am going on fishing boats and need short range and fast lens that won't break the bank $600- 1000 . Any suggestions? I have looked online and there seems to be a lot of debate on sharpness of these lenses? Even looked at 18-200, 18-135mm reviews. Tell me your experiences on which are best performing lenses?

Di I have shoot with Xti. It is a great camera. I now use 60D. I use 18-135. It is not a fast lens. It is cost effective. 2.8 lens can be had for under 1K. Something else you might consider 50mm f1.8 can be had at $100.00 for low light it a great lens rather a standard. Hope helps.

I have the 15-85 it is not a fast lens, it is the sharpest lens I could find. You could go with the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 it comes highly recommended by reviewers for under $600 or you could go with the Canon 17-55 f2.8 for about $1000.

If you are shooting on a boat and not taking shots that need a tele then get a the 50mm f1.8 it will serve you well. if you need to cover a larger area get the 35mm 1.8 these lenses are not expensive and can be easily replaced with little cost. If you are on the water I would seriously NOT consider expensive glass....

You're getting some good suggestions based on your reference to zooms. Although identified as 'macro', the EF-S 60mm f/2.8 is sharp and fast no matter what you point it at, near or far. Only a bit outside your price range is the EF 35mm f/1.4L that will shoot like a classic 50mm on a crop sensor and the entire frame is sharp at f/2.

I think the 24-105 f/4L IS will be a good choice. You can get em pretty cheap because they are often included with some of Canons high end cameras as a kit lens that some people don't need. I've seen them for under $800 new from private party because of this.

Here is a link to a comparison of the 28-135 v. 24-105 by an independent reviewer who has the 5th highest traffic to his site of all the photo related sites on the 'net. You can use this to decide how much you want to spend for what amount of quality difference between those two lens.

So..your reqmt is:

1.) Fast
2.) IS

Canon has just released a 35mm f/2 IS lens in your price range.
