Can anyone comment on Nikon's Scene Recognition System? According to their Website, it is all one needs for correct exposure, color balancing, AF, etc. How many of you out there utilize it or rely on it?

Thanks.

I tried the scene mode on sports - action mode when we went to the PBR (Professional Bull Riders) but didn't have much luck with it. I did better the second day on S setting (shutter priority). It did work ok at a basketball game though. Those fast bulls plus poor lighting just didn't do well in sports mode.

Not much luck with me too. I use a D5100. The night settings seemed to help a bit when using a 35mm prime but I felt the other settings were essentially ineffective, particularly with the zooms

I use a D5000. I think of the scene modes as "assistant-in-a-box". But these modes are only hints. Sunset mode, for example, will change the color settings to emphasize reds. I take note of the settings the scene mode makes (ISO, color, etc). Then I go back to S, A, or M mode and make my own choices. Do this just a few times, then you can change the settings to the ones you need each time. BTW, I use primes only. At least I know the sweet spots for individual lenses. That's a lot tougher with zooms.
