I am no-where near a professional with a camera, however, I have had lessons for two years from a local photographer and feel like I am slowly learning how to take quality pxs. I have been asked to take pictures at a play in an auditorium where there will be low lights and I cannot use a flash. Any suggestions on the best settings for taking good pictures?

I shoot at 3,200 and 6,400 ISO

Thanks, JR1. I have read through the google article and made some notes. I will also try your settings as well.

You might want to get a fast lens...this was with 24mm wide open at 2.8 iso 1250.

Raise your ISO and shoot in RAW. Adjust when editing.

I think a new one (Nikon 24mm 2.8D) sells for about $360.00 or so on B&H...also maybe a used one for less mite be a deal to look into. I found this one on craigs list for 40 bucks!!...guy was switching to canon..."shrug"

Oh to be so lucky! I think I will try my luck out on Craig's list too! Otherwise, B&H may hear from me.

Raise the ISO to get a workable shutter speed. Us Auto white balance and of course shoot in Raw.

What makes a fast lens. I don't understand what it means when people say this. Specs please? :)

Wow..these are great JR1. I have been struggling with this on cloudy days and bird shots. The bird body is in focus, but the wings are blurry. My iso only goes to 1600, so I suppose I cannot expect to get action shots in low light conditions?

A fast lens is one with a very large aperture...2.8...2.0...1.8 and so on...down to 1.2 lets in a huge amount of light....so you'll have to use a much faster shutter.

Add a monoped (with shoulder brace) to the previous suggestions of a fast lens and high ISO.
