I've got 30 different Nikkor lenses (AF & MF) & 56 3rd party Nikon mount lenses (again in both MF & AF versions &only a couple of dups here, none in Nikkor)...I don't worry about resale as I seldom get rid of anything I get...To only stick with OEM is ludicrous IMHO as the OEM's don't have have all their bases (read focal lengths & aperture values)covered & many 3rd party are equal or better in image quality anymore. Yeah, most 3rd party are not up to OEM in build quality & will lose more value in the used market, but as a percentage of their original value, I doubt that it's that great a difference. Older, used MF lenses have been increasing in value though, as more & more newer DSLR's are able to use them effectively...

Holy Crap!!!! You have more lenses than I have underwear.

I am considering purchasing either a Sigma 105mm f2.8 OS macro or a Canon 100mm f2.8 IS macro. Both are currently on sale at this time with the Canon being about $100 more. My question: assuming equal performance and quality, do third party lenses (Sigma, Tamron, etc.) hold value as well as Canon or Nikon lenses?
Thanks in advance.

Dan

I own the Canon (non IS version), and I love it. It is extremely sharp. Regardless of how good the Sigma may be, I doubt it would be as sharp as the Canon. I'm not knocking the Sigma, just sayin' the Canon is so good, I doubt any lens could compare.

Why worry about resale value?...I have 5 different macro/micro lenses going back decades. Couldn't see parting with any as they all still work on my cameras (Nikon DSLR's) & give excellent results. Oh, my latest purchase was the Sigma EX model that was replaced by the OS version you are looking at......

There are reasons why the best retain more of their initial asking price.
Go cheap, get cheap. Buy the best and hang on to it .

The Canon rated ever so slightly better optically over at Dxo's website tests. I doubt that you would be able to discern any difference in field tests...Here is their rating & then a link to the site...Note that the Sigma rated higher than the Canon non-is model you have...
"For Canon:

1st place at 28: Carl Zeiss Makro-Planar T 100mm f/2 ZE Canon.
2nd place at 25: Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM.
3rd place at 24: Sigma 105mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM Canon.
4rd place at 23 (tie): Tamron SP AF 90mm F/2.8 Di MACRO Canon and Sigma 105mm F2.8 EX DG Macro Canon.
5th place at 18: Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM."

I just bought the Canon 100mm L lens and it's great. However, the first one I had was defective and had to be returned so be certain you buy from one of the good dealers. The lens is sharp and well built. Have fun and keep shootin'. Mike

59, I think the answer IS simple. The Canon will hold a better value, as has been said.
That said, it's pretty easy to complicate the issue.
