The Canon EF 1.4x 111 extender (3 pins taped) is useless with my 400mm prime, on my 7D. Bird photography is my main interest. The camera takes an age to af, after 'hunting', with loads of stops lost. Have others experienced this problem? Manual focusing not really an option. I found it works ok using my 5DM2, but I now don't use this camera for birding, & can't think why I'd want to use it now with the 5D anyway.... Think I'll just get rid!

They don't function as well as you'd like on lenses that are f/5.6 or slower. It will work fine on a 70-200 f/4 or f2.8 or a 300 f/4, but not the 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 or the 400 f/5.6
