yeah i'ts me again.just received my sunpack tripod from b+h.this model has a pistol grip. when trying to take a moon shot,i could'nt get enough angle to view the moon for the picture.is it common for these grips to not have the degree of movement as screw handles?

Pistol grips are, by design, extremely limited in movement. Some can be turned backwards, or sideways, to gain versatility in one direction, but always at the loss of movement in one of the other directions.

I tried it on my sunpak. It works when you pull out the center column, tilt the grip by 90 degrees and ... shoot in portrait. It´s a limitation to the convenience of a pistol grip.

I have a pistol grip, and they can get into various positions, but you have to plan ahead.

There will be a notch cut out that will allow you to tilt the head to extremes - like 90 degrees.

Also, rotate the camera on the head so that it is in the proper position to tilt the camera into that notch.

You won't have total movement in all directions, but by rotating the camera and positioning that cut-out in the right place, you should be able to get the angle you want.

There should be a cutout allowing you to shot at extreme angels and at 90 degrees

Had the same problem with my pistolgrip. For moon shots, or any other when wind and geography allow, lengthen one tripod leg and shorten the other two.
