outdoor evening event

I'm going to take pictures tonight of an outdoor "coffee shop" music venue. I have the D600 and kit lenses and a 50mm lens. Any thoughts about shutter, aperature, and iso that might yield interesting results? I should be able to sit up front, but that's all I know.

I would probably try the 50mm and higher ISO, like 1600 depending on the lighting conditions. That because you did not specify what "kit" lenses you had. If you have the 24-85mm FX Nikon then that might be a better choice because of more versatility and range.

I think the 50 would do the better job for single head and head and shoulder shots. Definitely the 28-75 for everything else. Hopefully the lighting will cooperate. Maybe a flash and a monopod would help if you can use walls and/or ceiling to bounce flash. How about reporting back to UHH how you think you did afterward? Yes, we're interested. Good luck.

Bonnie,
I would try to stay on my feet reather than sitting in a chair. By staying mobile you'll be able to move around, get on the side shoot from through the crowd to show the audience, get down low in front so you can shoot the performer(s) from interesting angles. Set your ISO high, 1600 is a good place to start. Set your white balance for auto becaause you probably don't know what the lighting setup is and you can go back and shift your balance in Photoshop or what ever image program you're using. I would shoot RAW if you can so you have max control. I wouldn't be afraid to set the exposure on auto, that way you can concentrate on framing the image.

As long as you're close enough you'll love your 50mm ..... you'll be using one of the best tools ..... at f4 or f5.6 (depending on the depth of field you need) you'll do good .....

Thanks for your help! I used all three of my lenses - Tamron 28-75 for a lot of the earlier group shots while it was still light. Then when it got much darker, I moved to the Nikon 50, but got brave and brought out the Nikon 70-300.
Because, I knew the organizers very well, I was able to ask them to bring in more light for the performers!
I certainly have a better understanding of the term "fast glass", now I just wish I could afford some...
