If this is the wrong place to ask this question, I am sorry to bother you with it.

However, I do need some help with finding good background music to use for the slide shows I create for clients who want photo slide shows. ( I realize that for personal use any music is ok, but when it is not for personal use, I cannot afford to pay a lot of money for copyrighted music.) Any suggestions will be appreciated very much!

I don't know what kind of music you had in mind, but there is plenty of free classical music for backgrounds and it is all beyond copyright age.

You can copy the link from you tube music videos and then go to "you tube convert to MP3" follow the instructions to convert music to downloadable MP3 file.

Vimeo is a video sharing site. They provide music from Audiosocket, SmartSound and Free Music Archive at their relatively new Music Store.

https://vimeo.com/musicstore

There are about 75,000 tracks available. Many are free under "Creative Commons" where credit must be given to the artist.

SmartSound has about 3500 tracks. SmartSound has been a supplier of music backgrounds to professional editors and has been expensive. Now, at Vimeo, you can get personal use tracks for $2 each and for commercial use, $20.

Each of the SmartSound tracks can be modified by "variation", "mood" and length. When you like it and provide a credit card number your MP3 is created for download.

I'm not so sure about this; the music, itself, may be out of copyright, but not the recordings.
I don't really know the details, as it does not affect me personally, but I have friends who do the sort of thing which was mentioned, and they have a form of licence which, I think, is not too expensive. They are amateurs who do it as a community service.
I am, of course, talking about the UK here.

A mechanical license from The Harry Fox Agency is not that expensive and supports our creative brothers and sisters the Musicians. It is my understanding that most Royalty Free Music is from material previously used and not defended so the Artist, Writer and Publisher "lost" the Rights to their material. At least this is what several of my musician friends have told me...

The Harry Fox Agency
https://www.harryfox.com/
The Harry Fox Agency (HFA) is the premier mechanical licensing agent and provider of rights ... An account is required to license the tunes.

BTW any modification to the material must be approved by the Writer and if approved they own the rights.
You can sample some of the music and use it free. The Supremes decided and defined that issue and I forgot the detail.

You should find all you need with the links provided.

I'm just going to pipe in here and say thank you for wanting to use Royalty Free music. I was visiting websites just the other day, and the music playing is stuff that is pretty recent and still aired today. I'd be surprised if the photographers using that music is paying royalties on it.

Music is an art just like photography,,,nobody wants their stuff stolen and used for free.

Thank you all so much for helping me find and use royality free music.

I can't afford to pay big fees, and I would not feel right using someone's creative efforts without permission. You really came thru on this for me.

A special thanks to bsprague, Captain C,and Fat Gregory for suggesting specific sites!

Those all look useful, but prices range from $10 to $60, and higher depending on use.

I re-read your post and noticed that you are needing background music for commercial use. The $20 choices at
Vimeo's SmartSound might make the most sense.

You suggested anything is OK for personal use. I'm not sure that works very well. Personal video often ends up on YouTube or Vimeo for sending to family and friends. Since advertising can become involved, does that not make copyrighted music unusable?

Personal use for me is use for family and friends...and on CD's or DVD's...and they agree not to use on any type of social media. Which means using only on their computers. All have agreed and have followed my use guidelines.

Well, yeah. Not sure what your point is. I have searched many free sites and it is clear that like with many things, we get what we pay for. If you want REALLY great music, check out: https://www.songfreedom.com

I would agree that if you search really hard, there are some hidden gems in the free or cheap stuff.
