Depends on the type of event. Where are you going to sell the photos?

If it were my event and a guest tried that without prior arrangments being made, that guest would be evicted from the event without feet touching the ground.
If arrangements were made, an agreement would have to be arrived at regarding fees to the the event organiser (me).

Were you invited as a photographer or something else? Did you make your intentions known?
Maybe if the person that invited you announces that you have some photos for sale, it would then introduce you as the photographer with something to sell and let them come to you.
I don't like it when at an event somebody ask to take my photo then later tries to sell me a keychain viewer, but I have bought them on occasion.

If you were 'invited' to the event, took pictures, then gave them to the 'host', then.......I bet you won't do that again!
To the people at the event, maybe the host and hostees, sponsors of the event

I guess I didn't read the first post well enough.
You were invited, took pictures and then YOU tried/wanted to sell the pictures to the host/hostees and sponsers of the event. Now I get it.
If I was a host/hostee or sponser and had invited you, but not as a photographer, then yes I would say it was a little tacky, AND you would never get an invite again. ( unless you asked prior to the event, then it would be different, unless you were told by any one of those people no)

You were invited as a guest and you want to go and take pictures and sell them? Then YES that's tacky as well it's a sure way to start and create bad word of mouth for your up and coming business.
Put it this way, you are hosting an event. You invite a friend, he shows up with a blender, plops down a sign letting people know that drinks are $3 each.... how happy would you be?

The topic of sales would have to be raised delicately ahead of time.

Sales or marketing is not a delicate matter. It should be done in a very upfront precise staged manner. Followed up with a written memo of understanding in MHO. Or barring that after the fact then a discreet inquirer.

How would you feel if a couple, or more guests started doing the same thing. Be the official photographer, or leave it alone.

Are you trying to establish a business or just raise a few buck to pay for the last lens you bought? If the former, seems to me you would fare better by giving each party attendee a print of their informal portrait. Each should be PP'd as if you were to be paid for your work.
