There are many options.

1.) Canon 430EXII (good bargain)

2.) Canon 580EXII (great flash; expensive)

3.) Yongnuo YN565 (excellent budget flash)

4.) Lumopro LP160 (killer budget flash; manual)

Do a google search.

Then there is only ONE flash system worth considering, I have two, Metz 45 CL4-Digital.

My choice, if you can afford it will last a lifetime, I also use these fro exceedingly fast recycle times

One flash, fits ALL cameras

The 600EX is a great Speedlite but it's a bit much for your camera body. If you plan to upgrade bodies in the near future to a body made since mid 2012 or so then maybe it would be a nice investment. But right now only a few of the newer bodies can take advantage of all the new wireless radio features of this new model of Speedlite.

The 430EX II and 580EX II would make more sense for a T1i. I'd also recommend a flash frame to put the flash off the hot shoe.

You won't be able to use flash at a basketball game so maybe you should invest in a good fast lens before the Speedlite. You'd be better off with a 70-200 f/2.8 lens for BB games.

I have 2 of the 600EX-RT Speedlites; I'm very pleased with them. The radio communication capability makes them very powerful for off-camera flash setups, especially when coupled with the ST-E3-RT Speedlite Transmitter. I'm also happy with this products functionality.

jeep-daddy's advice is very sound. I think the points he made are very appropriate for your situation.
