I have a nikon d90 that I can use in commander mode and fire my nikon 600 flash off camera. I would like to use my 640ex(Canon) in a slave or any other mode to fire it with my d90. does any one know if this is possible.
I am trying to set up my portrait lighting with a 3 light setup.....

Don't know the specifics, but since they are totally different brands, the best you would be able to do is use some kind of "Optical Slave" on the Canon flash, probably some accessory unit and that flash's settings would have to be controlled MANUALLY.

I would like to get some use out of this flash with my nikon if possible as I no longer use my old canon powershot..

The Nikon commander will not trigger the Canon flash, and I doubt that there is any hot shoe adapter that will allow the Nikon flash to control a Canon flash. As someone mentioned previously, the best solution is to get a hot shoe with an optical slave that will trigger the Canon flash such as the Seagull SYK-5. Just like the adaptor that I used back in film days. Just a simple hot-shoe trigger that will work with ANY flash unit. And the 430ex appears to have the 'manual' control needed to make it work correctly as a 'fill' or 'background' light.
