RodL: great link. Explains everything you should know about batteries.
OK, eneloops. Do they need the charger you can purchase with them, or will the existing charger I have work fine?
Thanks for all the comments folks.
Steve
I found the answer on UHH from Nikinuser -
http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-54659-1.htmlI use an Energizer charger with Eneloop batteries and have never had any problems running out of charge.I have 8 of the batteries just in case and never had occasion to have to swap batteries out. The only time I may need both sets is if I take thousands of flash pictures. The Eneloops hold their charges for months. Excellent!
Crwiwy: A very long comment, but to me it wrote volumes. You explained a lot of things in the comment in a way that all should understand.
I thank you for that. Once We get a few more comments about the charger, I will make my decision. I have two dealers close to work, Henry's camera store and Costco. Costco is a lot better deal if I just purchase batteries. I have to make a second decision in that I may upgrade my bridge camera to a newer model. I have to see if the future camera also takes AA batteries.
Thanks for all the comments

I still have my Olympus bridge camera but after looking for a replacement I bought a used DSLR last year which uses a different type of battery and which last many times as long - and gives a good indication of Charge remaining. It takes a Rechargeable Lithium Ion battery and a third party battery can be obtained not much more expensive than the NiMH AA batteries.

AA Lithium rechargeable batteries are only made by one or two companies in the world, are hard to find and VERY expensive; they are mainly used for military applications, primarily in IR Sniper Optics.
AA eneloops ARE NiMH batteries; they may have a longer shelf life, but that is a result of superior construction, not the type of battery. See:
http://us.sanyo.com/Battery-Products/XX-AA-4-PackYou misunderstood my posts....I did not state that eneloops are other than NiMH. Eneloops are usually referred to as "hybrid NiMH" or "LSD NiMH". See:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nickel%E2%80%93metal_hydride_batteryMy point was that standard Lithium AA bateries are non-rechargeable whereas the eneloops are rechargeable and superior to standard NiMH batteries because of shelf life.
There are plenty of choices for DSLR cameras.

Your batteries are experiencing memory issues. Every chemistry developed for small consumer batteries will develop a "memory" (the batteries get used to a charging pattern and "memorize it" such that only the amount of new charge, not the full battery capacity, can be used.) Those who tell you otherwise sell batteries for a living.
That said, I use a LOT, as in dozens, of NiMH AA batteries, and find they do die, no matter what you do or how you charge, after enough time has passed.
What helps is a battery load tester:

Eneloops ae my preferred choice. They hold a charge while in storage.
I'm completely at sea when it comes to battery knowledge. I've been using simple Duracells in my SB700 but maybe I should be using something else. I would hate to harm my flash with a leaky battery. Where does one buy Eneloops? they're not likely to have them at Walgreens.

Two primary sources are Amazon and Costco.

I use NiZn batteries, they are 1.6 volts and are rated at 2500 mWh. They have very long shelf life without being charged and are really good for flashes. The brand I have is PowerGenix and work excellent. These are far superior to the Nimh batteries.
I use Eneloop batteries. Link
http://us.sanyo.com/Battery-Products/AA-8-Pack-SEC-HR3U8BPNThey make three kinds. 1500 charges, 1000 charges, and 500 charges but higher mA. The standards are 2000mA and the hi capacity are 2500mA. The higher capacity will take more pictures, but not last as many recharges. Also, the 1500 charge model will stay 75% charged sitting in a drawer for 3 years. The higher capacity will stay charged for one year.
3 to 4 years wow. Be grateful for 3 to 4 years use! Just buy some more.
Use Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA batteries, cost about $15 for four. I have replaced them once after 3 years use including lots of LCD time Canon A640. Rechargeable's require lots of recharging. Just use the most expensive Energizers. You will be amazed.

There are lots of choices on Amazon, I joined Amazon Prime to save on shipping and have access to videos and books for my Kindle and computer. I live 50 miles from the nearest store of any size.
