You'll get a tiny bit better noise control than with the a77 though they use the same sensor because the NEX doesn't have the translucent mirror in the way.

I have a NEX-3 and love the compactness, but it doesn't have a viewfinder. the NEX 7 has the outstanding OLED finder. A bit on the expensive side, but something I'd love to own. You can just feel the quality when you pick up a NEX.

It is a dynamite camera! I would love to have one but it is out of my price range for now.

Have you tried reviews? Dpreview is good, and snapsort.com can compare it to a camera of your choice. Or, just Google Sony NEX 7 reviews.

I can't comment on the NEX 7, I have the NEX 5N. I like it alot, it doesn't have a viewfinder but I like the features it has. I got this camera as a more compact option to my DSLR. The NEX 7 has the OLED viwfinder as the previous poster mentioned, which is something really nice to have.

The picture quality of this little Sony is really impressive and to me that's really what matters. Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Tim

I owned a NEX-5, sold it and bought a NEX-7. It is capable of 90+% of my big boy Canons. I use as my personal/vacation camera and am well pleased with it.

I have a number of E-mount lenses plus an adapter which allows me to use my Canon EF lenses in aperture priority with manual focus.

There are too many pros of this camera to list here. Most want to know the cons:

1. In low light it has slow AF but this is typical of most if not all mirrorless cameras.

2. It does not have the low light, low noise capability as my Canon 7D, 5D MII or 5D MIII but we are comparing apples and oranges.

3. Normal flash sync is 1/60 sec. Often times I'm shooting in hi-speed sync.

4. Accessory flash mounting is proprietary.

5. E mount lens selection is limited and expensive. If I were to limit myself to two lenses they would be the (E-mount) 10-18mm f/4 OSS and 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS. Both are expensive lenses but better glass is more important than the camera body. NEX cameras lens correct (distortion, aberration, etc.) E-mount lenses in camera.

6. You can use Sony Alpha lenses with an adapter (expensive) which increases the selection of lenses but ruins the form factor of the camera.

7. It is a bit more cumbersome (especially if you're are used to Canon or Nikon DSLRs) and slower to use because it is a menu driven rather than button and dial driven user interface.

8. The display screen is not fully articulated.

That being said, I love it and won't trade until the next iteration comes along.

Actually, you can use virtually ANY lens on the NEX with the right glassless adapter which means the full quality of the lens is not ruined by an adapter with glass in it. A non-NEX lens will be manual focus, but with the focus peaking feature, manual focus is quick, easy, and accurate. I use a minolta MD mount 50mm f/1.4, and a Minolta 70-210 AF on the NEX 3.

I can even use my Sony 70-400G on it.

Hmmm...I seem to have mentioned that I use my Canon EF lenses.

I do believe that there are adapters out there for Canon EF to NEX which will give you AF on some lenses. I know my older adapter will give me AF on a few of my L lenses but the AF is slow enough to be annoying.

I use a NEX5 and a NEX7 on a daily basis, the NEX7 is my main camera and I would not part with it, it is a really easy camera to use once you get into it, very versatile and the NEX 5 is a back up camera. The NEX7 has the Sony 18-200mm on it most of the time and I use the NEX5 with the Sony 10-18mm lens, occasionally I will use one of my Canon FD lens on the NEX7 for a little extra creativity if the situation arises.
Hopes this helps.

Before buying the NEX, check out the Nikon 1 V1. Much better price and almost as good in image quality.

Bought one about a year ago, and have been consistently pleased with it. Gets a bad rap in low light, haven't found that to be much of a concern, because I rarely shoot in low light. When I do, I've been quite pleased with the results.

The peak focus aid is a great help for older eyes, altho most of the time the autofocus is plenty fast. The articulated view screen is also a bonus.

The electronic viewer is a change from optical, but works well and I can't complain about it, other than to say it is different and might take a little getting used to. but only a little.

The camera is very light, which makes it a joy to carry around. I mostly use the kit lens, which gives me all I could ask for. I do have an adapter and a wide selection of Minolta lenses which are quite inexpensive, for when I want something longer than the 55mm.

There are complaints about the location of the video button, and I'll admit I've hit it a few times, but mostly it's not a big issue.

The menu system can take some getting used to as well, but the learning curve isn't bad.

Would I buy it again? Yes. I've been very pleased with the results, the ease of use, and particularly its light weight and versatility. It is NOT weatherproof, so a bit of caution in inclement conditions is needed, but I've happily used it in less than ideal conditions--the beach, salt spray, drizzle--and as long as it's cleaned and dried afterwards, I've had no issues.

This was an upgrade from an older Sony Alpha 100, and no buyers remorse here. Very happy with it.

Yes I have looked at many revues, but comments from a fine group as this would be helpful. :)

Also look at the Nex6 less and in some respects better than the 7.
Anyway that is what I've found out by reading.. You can't go wrong with the
7.

I'll keep it short. Due to weight/size limitations on travels and my advancing age
I went from a Nikon DLSR and 3 lenses to the NEX-7 and 3 lenses and am very pleased.
That combination met or exceeded my expectations. I loved my Nikon but planes, trains, taxis etc. was
making our travels tough with size and weight. I realize that might not be important
to you or others, but also the quality of the images is very good and it has all the
features I need. I prefer street photography in densely populated areas and this
camera/lens combinations is less noticable to the public.
If you have specific questions you can PM me and I'll be happy to try to answer
them.
Regards, Scalawag.
