You need continuous diffused lighting...no flashes.
I am assuming you have the 18-55 lens. If so this will work fine. When I take photos of watch movements I place the subject on a light box (like a slide sorter) to elminate shadows. Aim the camera straight down on the coin. You can put the subject at the end of a table and use a tripod to point straight down on the subject. Turn on spot metering use manual white balance based on the background. AV f11 the camera will select the shutter speed. Here is a watch movement taken in this manner. The light is overhead diffused 5000k fluorescent.
