Ignorance among politicians and the media

Both our politicians and our media must be among the most ignorant amog us. Just heard a CBS anchor saying a pressure cooker bomb would send sharpnel several hundred miles an hour per minute rather than several hundred feet. They seem to listen the experts from another orifice in their body, rather then their ear openings. These talking heads have no idea what makes things tick, which really makes them good candidates for a political life.
Politicians...Oh please don't let me go on about them. They in their either naivity or stupidity seem to think a background check will make things hanky dory. Who has ever seen a criminal submit a background check? If one of you ever have, please tell me. Whoever, ever seen a criminal ever massacring people and kids?... It is the nuts stupid. The nuts. A background check is only involves the buyer. What the hell are you going to do about her kid who is nuts....See what I mean? Even our politicians can't think straight...There is no way anything that is proposed will effect the problem, but shoot, we have lots more band-aids where these came from.

Can anyone tell me of one time that a mass murder bought the guns legally?

We all know that this is a knee jerk reaction to a terrible tragedy. And as usual, the NRA (of which I am a lifetime member) is not helping its own cause any, as usual.

But I have always been amazed as to why there is not better control of sales at a gun show? Better yet, with all these statistics being thrown around by both sides, how many of these people responsible for these national tragedies bought their weapons from gun shows? Where are the stats on that? Sadly, the whole thing is so stupid. Of course the media just has to stir things up. This is how they make their money.

It makes me wonder. What if the media did not make such a fuss over the debacle on Wall Street a few years back? would there even have been a recession? Did in fact the media make things worse? Maybe, maybe not. And of course, the politicians had to jump in on that one too.

I haven't a clue as to how to prevent things like what happened in Sandy Hook. I do Know that tighter gun control is not the answer. All it is going to do is make it harder on the rest of us (gun owners). It has also been said that these new laws might make ordinary law abiding citizens criminals by a simple mistake in paperwork.

Down where I live, several sheriffs and police chiefs said that they won't support any of the new laws because of this. These are heads of police agencies saying this!

Yes, politicians and the media need to be more responsible in their fact checking and what they say to the masses because there are way too many people who believe them.

Oh, and speaking of facts being out of proportion, What is the difference between the rate of fire between a Remington semi automatic 308 hunting rifle and an AR 15 semi automatic assault rifle? None. You can only pull the trigger so fast. So, what does banning assault weapons have to do with the price of tea in China? Personally, I have no desire to pick up another M 16 or anything that looks or feels like one. I have had enough of that.

I have a novel thought

Lets focus on the laws and punishment of the criminals that use a gun during the commission of any crime. The current punishment is too soft.

Lets look at everyone's responsibility, citizens and government alike on reporting and dealing with the mentally disturbed. If you have knowledge of such a person and don't report it just because you don't want to get involved, or if a government agency is informed of such a person and does nothing. Who is is to blame? Speak up, you may save lives, act on such information and you may save lives.

I presently own no guns, I have in the past. I have no issue having to submit to a local or national background check. Why? Because I am not a CRIMINAL!!!

We need criminal control not gun control.

tainkc, none of those guns were bought from a gun show. All from legitimate gun dealers, but that is not the point. Point is, criminals usually kill each other, not innocents if they can help it. The mentally ill, or as I had put it, nuts do these type of stuff. Of course I don't discount terrorists, but they seem to use other means. No background check, as proposed will weed out nuts, period.

And how do you propose we do that? How would anyone possibly know who will be a criminal?
I'd say, forget the criminals. They usually harm each other and most don't have enough brains. So far everyone of these tragedies have been caused by the so called mentally disabled. That is what needs to be controlled at the moment.

The mother of the Sandy Hook killer had background check for every gun she bought. She was cleared. But no one asked her if she had a family member who was a nut...How in hell the seller would know that? or find out about it? Do you see my point, how clueless the media and the politicians are?

You are right. The mass murders are deranged people. Some have even been under a doctors care.
If the punishment is stiff enough the criminals think twice about using a gun.
Every day more people die from guns than do in a mass murder but the "news" makes a big deal about it because it was all in one place.

I don't think the politicians are clueless. I think they have a agenda.

I'm sorry to say that I lost all respect for the NRA several years ago when they sold out all other gun organizations, to buy themselves an exemption to a bill that would force such organizations to turn over their membership rosters to the government. Fortunatly the bill never made it to a vote, but I swore then and there I would never support the NRA again. Too many such organizations working for us all, and don't sell out their brothers in the process to cover their own a**.

I have found in my experience that if you meet enough people from enough backgrounds, you will come to the conclusion that there is no profession that is free from pseudo educated, ignorant, imbeciles! I was inspired by one such individual that caused me to come up with the following saying that I coined myself on the spur of the moment while I was in discussion with him. Being somewhat agitated with his reasoning powers I blurted out to him "You must have a split personality because you are too stupid to be one person! There must be two of you in there... "Dumb and Dumber"! Regretfully he had a college degree!

Although it is rare, I have met some high school drop outs that made more sense then some pseudo educated idiot with a piece of paper that they call a college diploma... Don't get me wrong! I am NOT knocking a good education but I am saying that there are some with degrees that are mental midgets! Please excuse my using a negative term such as midgets... I don't wish to be politically incorrect but I am just trying to emphasize a point with a negative term.

I agree. I became a lifetime member about 40 years ago. I became disillusioned many years ago. I do not keep up with them anymore.
