I am going to a minimotor race this evening and am wondering if it is possible to get some nice shots of the bikes wizzing past with kit equipment?

That's actually not a bad lens. I took a class, the kid next to me had that lens & got some nice shots. Some shots I saw that he took with it were of a motocross races. He got some great shots, including in the middle of jumps. Do you own a monopod? If you do, you might try some panning. Set the shutter speed to around 1/4 second (experiment) then move with the racers while exposing. You can get some nice shots with them in focus (or close) and the background quite blurred. Have fun.

I have the T3i and that lens. Have many photos I'm very happy with (some UHH viewers might disagree with a few I've posted - just don't take far-away, small subjects and try to crop a lot out!).

I purchased that lens for my step daughter to use with her rebel XSi. She's taken some great sports shots at school events and I've used it on my 60D to photo when she's the athlete. One such event was a night soccer game and with the right settings i got some great action shots under the lights! It's a very capable lens! Have fun!

I have the lens. It's a good lens. You might read up on how to photograph moving objects. But I think it will do you well. I like mine just fine. My avatar was done with this lens and cropped pretty much, but it still came out good.
