I did something stupid. I bid on Ebay for a new lens but, without realsing it I puit in an extra nought.Of course I won but at a bigger price than I wanted. The seller kindly said I could pull out but I felt pbliged to go ahead, it was my mistake.
Carefully check.

Didn't realise you don't have noughts in the US. I thought we'd taught you everything.

You are allowed to withdraw a bid made by mistake and immediately replace it with the correct bid. What many people do is withdraw their bid, claiming it was a mistake, but they do not enter their "correct" bid. That happened to me with a car I was selling. The top bidder dropped out after several days - a day before the auction ended - claiming he had hit the wrong key. By then, the second highest bidder had started bidding on another car, so my car never got back up to the reserve price. I relisted the car, so I'm hoping it does better this time.

You taught us nought. We knew not to put too many zeros on ebay or Boston Bay.

but shouldn't ebay have autobid just to the next highest bid increment from the other bidders? If other folks bid $75 and viscountdriver accidentally bid $800 instead of $80 and the bid increment was $1 eBay should have just dropped him in at $76

You should be able to bid $1,000,000 for a $20 item and be safe because it's extremely unlikely anyone else would bid it up much beyond it's market value. Even the seller can't see what your maximum bid is.
