This is a great subject, and one I am familiar with. If you are in another country, BE POLITE...like the post says, engage in a conversation if you can. I had two instances here in the US....I had encountered a blacksmith and i wanted his picture. i walked up to him and politely asked, sir, may i take a picture of you working at your forge. he said "yes." but interrupted me when someone else stood beside me to shoot him also. he told the other person "no." and when the person asked why i was allowed, he very nicely said "this man asked me first. Now please go away so he can finish taking my picture." The same thing happened in Arizona when i asked a couple of old-timers the same thing. So, be polite and always ask permission!!!!! Sometimes people do pose for money. If you feel the shot is worth it, give them a buck. I will come back ten-fold....Yes it is much easier with a phone to take a picture. but with a camera, do as i do.
