I know this is an older one, but would this be a good lens to start with or should I just for for a new 105 macro? Sorry I thought the picture was bigger, what it is , is a Nikon Micro-Nikkor D 105 mm F/2.8 Lens. Will it work ok on my D3100 and D5200

It will work. What it doesn't have is VR.... I have the 105g-- but rarely use VR when shooting macro. This is because I typically use flash--along with a shutter duration sufficient to freeze any movement.

I used a Nikkor 105D for a few years. The optics are superb. I paid $300 for it used and sold it for $300, still in excellent condition.
Two years ago, I upgraded to a Nikkor 105G, as I needed the VR to offset slight hand-held camera movement. Paid $700 used, in mint condition.

View my older Flickr macro images. I document which lens used in all photos.
Here is a recent post of 105D images: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-100912-4.html#1887742
