PSE11 is still for sale - MSRP US$79.99
PS CS6 can be subscribed OR purchased for US$699.00
PS CS6E is same basis, but US$49.99/month or US$399.00
But Gimp is still free
I just BOUGHT CS6 instead of paying the rental. But you know, if I work out the cost since purchasing CS2, not so much difference.
What is most annoying is that Adobe, without ever notifying their long term customers, cut off all upgrades from CS2. Just a straight EF-YOU!
I paid over $1400 for the CS6 package. Adobe should remember that an attitude like that toppled Quark Xpress from a one time lofty position in the graphics business.

Picasa, too, is free, and it is real easy to use.

I've seen those listings. You need to read them carefully.
GIMP is very powerful, but like PS it can have a pretty steep learning curve for the more advanced features.
B&H/Adobe was having a sale late last year, and I picked up the LR/PS bundle. I wanted the commercial plugins/filters you could get, the copious training and documentation available. Right or wrong, it's the Industry standard.
I'm still using PSE 9 and PSC4 does what it says on the box.
For me, the biggest issue is training. ANY graphics editor will work, but if you have to learn how to make it work the way you want it to, you'll need training. Yes, we'll have to pay for the training, also. From my research, that leaves only one product that works really well and has mounds and mounds of training available.
I subscribe to a canon only magazine called Photoplus, each month we receive a free training disc with the mag brilliant.

I too have PSE 9. I have decided it is time to upgrade my photo editing software. I have decided that Zoner Photo Studio 15 is the best bang for the money. I am still using it in a 30 day trial, the pro version is $70 when I buy it. I am finding ZPS15 to be much more user friendly that PSE/PS and uses similar icons. I find the presets do better than PSE, not as harsh, and still allows me to adjust (sliders) certain aspects if I want to. ZPS has free training tutorials and is continually updating these tutorials when they have a new version.

Many PS users did GIMP thinking it is only for Linux, not true it's multi-platform. They dis it saying it is not as good. They are unaware that Open Source apps are meant to be customizable and GIMP can be more useful than PS with nearly 1000 plug-ins!
Make that steep learning curve like a gently sloping hill by checking out a site authored by a fellow hogger, Kat Landreth --- PareandFocus.com.
