I'm looking to purchase a Nikon D7000 from a reputable distributor. I'm thinking that a refurbished copy would be the way to go; given Nikon's customer service and back/front focusing issues.
Can anyone give me either a place to buy a new one (and reasons why), or a refurbished. I haven't bought anything used ever and am hesitant about doing so.
I think I can save a bunch by going with the D7000 over the new D7100, but am still unsure about it. Any comments?

Otto, I have "the other brand", not Nikon, but both my 50D (bought from National Camera Exchange) and my 60D (bought from Canon directly) are refurbished cameras. I would not hesitate to purchase refurb from a REPUTABLE establishment. I was referred to The Camera Company by a professional photographer who purchases stuff from them.

I bought a Nikon D90 from Cameta Camera -- refurbished. It came like new in the box with owner's manual and appropriate accessories like it was fresh from factory. The price was substantially lower and I'm thrilled with the product.

Just a thought....in the amateur radio community, many believe refurbished means what could go wrong has gone wrong and been fixed.

What's the price difference?

If it's a Nikon refurbish it'll probably be good but how ya gonna tell it is unless you purchase it directly from the Nikon store .....

If it was only 10% less I'd go new .....

B&H Photo ..... you can't go wrong there .....

Otto, just make sure it is a "Manufacturer" refurb. If it is done by Nikon, you are likely to get a good camera.

I'll say it again

Does everyone always buy a new house or car

Common sense applies

Nothing wrong with pre owned from a reputable dealer

Would I pay an extra £400 for the D7100, NO

Cameta. They add their one-year warranty to the 90 day Nikon Refurb warranty.

No shipping or sales tax.

Mine came brand new. The shutter count was zero.

If they are a Nikon dealer and they say "factory refurbished" you can be sure it is a Nikon refurb. If they did otherwise Nikon wouldn't sell through them any more.

As I and another noted we both had fab service and results from Cameta. I expect you'd get almost the same from any of the big one; e.g. Abes of Maine (which is in New Jersey), etc.

If you go with Adorama I understand they offer a low price warranty extension similar to Cameta's. You have to pay something like $8 for it and jump through a hoop to find it but it would still be a good deal. Cameta throws it in for free with no fuss.

I bought a refurbished D7000 from B&H about 6 months ago...no issues...with a 3yr. service contract, $996. New was still I think at about $1,100-$1,200. I'm waiting for a D7100 refurb....to become available...also great deals on "Fred Miranda" site, http://www.fredmiranda.com/

I have purchased cameras and equipment from Adorama, Buy Dig and B&H; all of whom are knowledgeable, friendly, and prompt. I bought my last camera (a D7100) locally because I didn't want to wait the passover days but did have to pay tax. I avoided the days in transit and the shipping charges.

I don't have a lot of experience with the 7100 yet but sure like it a lot so far. It comes with a thick manual which is well written. From what I have read on the net, a refurbished 7000 is close and saves a few bucks, but I chose the higher resolution and updated hardware. I upgraded from a 6mp camera to 24mp and can sure tell the difference. Haven't tried the 16mp (same as the D7000) option of the 7100

I do a lot of wildlife and macro photography so I thought 24mp would be important.
