Sigma Flash

A friend has a D3100 with a Sigma zoom (filter diam. 82mm). Not surprisingly, he is getting the semi-circular shadow at the bottom of his images when using the pop-up flash. I told him he had to buy a flash unit that he could use off camera and on. Sigma has a light on sale for $135 down from $165. The model is an EF-610 DG ST. Can I safely recommend this or should I push him toward an SB700 Speedlight for more than twice the money? Complicating things is that the guy owns the company I work for.

The Sigma's are good flashes, i have 2, but don't get the EF-610 DG ST, it has no control over anything. Only TTL.

I have the 530 super, they are discontinued but you can still get them new with warranty. Great flash and lots of control with LCD screen.

I'd suggest the Nikon flash ..... Nikon does flash best, that's what Nikon is famous for .....

Nikon SB400 is inexpensive and probably all the flash he'll ever need, size and weight is ideal for the D3100 .....

I agree that Sigma are GOOD, people often forget Sigma, Metz, SUNPAK (which I use and have done for 30 years)

Is the SB400 flash up high enough to not cast a shadow on the image?

With only one flash where ya can't use bounce there's always a possibility of a shadow .....

Pick up a SB400 with a few good rechargeable AA's and a good AA charger ..... you'll thank me in the morning

You could always add a wireless slave .....

Nikon is known for their flash guns, they're the ones every other manufacturer compares theirs to for a reason ..... Unless your subject is more than 50 feet away the SB400 is all you'll ever need ..... it's small, perfectly balanced for the small SLR's, recycle fast, and inexpensive ..... ya can't go wrong
