I'm actually asking on behalf of my workmate. He has a Pentax iST, and a collection of lenses. He films car racing and rallying mostly, and feels it's time to upgrade from 6mp. He mainly uses his Tamron 50 - 250 or 270, (I can't remember exactly which) and a 400 manual focus. He is going to borrow my K-30 to play with, but as he is aware that his lenses are also begging for improvement, migrating to Canon or Nikon is not out of the question. He fancies Nikon over Canon. Does anyone have any input or advice on this? He is finding the focus slow, (following a speeding racecar say) I feel the Tamron lens which is not fast in the aperture is a factor in that? The price point for K-30 or K-5 is about right for him, but wants to be using it still in 5 years time, so buying the right camera now is more important than penny pinching, within reason. I suggested I tap into the depth of opinions on UHH, which I value and enjoy. Thanks for reading. Andrew.
I shoot Canon but I've got no problem with Nikon. I could see your friend shooting a Canon 7D but the thing he should research first is what lenses he wants to use. The price and performance of the glass is just as important as that of the camera. Look at the whole package.

I shoot Pentax K-5 IIs myself and feel its a fine camera, but I've heard that for sports photography with moving subjects, Canon is the best solution.
I shoot Nikon and wouldn't switch - but, if I were primarily shooting auto racing I'd look at the Canon 1Dx
I went from Pentax to Nikon mainly due to lens availabity for the Pentax. My son still use the Pentax with a Sigma 50-500 got to love the built in VR in the body. The Canon 1dx is awesome but pricey. But you get what you pay for. I still have a Pentax PZ1P film body it is an awesome camera.
Canon seems to dominate sports as observes by those long ostentatious white lenses seen at every big event.....
For sports, I would say Canon, but more for lenses than camera.

I shoot nikon and canon...and my advice would be that if he has a collection of pentax lenses......stick with pentax.
great photographs come from great photographers.
upgrade to a new pentax and spend your time shooting and learning.
changing to canon or nikon is not going to make him better.
stick with pentax.
I have a friend that has an older sony dslr.....his photos are so great.
I can shoot a photo from my best stuff and come out equal, but not better.....and i have spent 10 times what he has.
if i had to guess, i would say it's 30% the equipment and 70% the photographer!
Sony A77. Nothing more to say.

Why change from Pentax ? he already has his lenses and they will fit and work on a new Pentax and Pentax is as good a camera as you can buy.!

Right on! Of course there will always be those who insist that people should buy a particular brand/model because its what they have! Its probably the most common responses on this entire forum.
I have used Pentax equipment since 1977 and can't see any reason to change to another brand.
