New And Wanting To Learn

After a lifetime of taking photos with a point and shoot I finally bought a Canon Rebel XSi. I love the results I'm getting but so far I'm still only using the Auto setting. I've been reading about aperture and shutter speed and it would appear understanding these 2 is the first stand in creating good photos. Does anyone know of a simple, layman chart or formula that an older rookie can use to help determine which combination of the 2 should be used in different situations?
Thanks for you help.

This may a good info to get you started. Click on this link http://www.digicamguides.com/learn/exposure.html. I would also recommend you do more searches on the Internet about aperture and shutter speed, because there is wealth of info about these topics on the Internet. Arnold

You are correct in believing that f/stop and shutter speed combos are key to learning how to most effectively use your camera. Here is a starting point for learning about these key concepts: http://tinyurl.com/3l2vugz

Bryan Peterson's book "Understanding Exposure" would be a great place to start. Easy to read and understand.

You Tube has a complete course on the SXi and how to use it.
Go to YouTube.com and search Canon SXi.

You will want a good exposure of the image in the camera for best results. So you will want to understand and control ISO, Aperture, and Shutter Speed.

For an explanation of these 3 variables and their relation, you may wish to review the discussion at this Web site:
http://www.cameraporn.net/2007/12/24/aperture-iso-and-shutter-speed-the-good-kind-of-threesome/

This Web site provides a real-time simulator emulating how the various camera settings affect exposure: http://camerasim.com/camera-simulator.html Ha, ha. You don’t need a camera to learn how to take pictures.

Thanks so much for all of the replies! You have all been a super wealth of knowledge and I really appreciate it. Now I am just going to experiment until I get the "hang" of it.
