While at a party celebrating my son's return from Afghanistan, we discussed our annual trip to the Allegheny Mts. to photograph Elk during the rutting season. When we would go depended on how well his HS Girls Soccer team did during the upcoming season. (He is coach of the Varsity team.)
When the time came to head out to the northwestern part of the state, it was a rainy day and the weatherman left no chance for it to let up throughout the weekend. But I had to pass because my Gout acted up and walking was out of the question. Needless to say, I was dissapointed. My son decided he would make it a one day trip opting not to take any camping gear, planning to return home later that day.
After a boring, rainy drive west on I-80, he arrived in Elk Country and the bulls were bugling. It was still raining but seeing the herds was enough for him to wander around the elk range.
It had stopped raining when he shot these pics in a meadow where a small band of elk were already laying down. Soon after this bull bugled, he layed down and it started to pour rain, again. Despite the rain and misty conditions, herds were seen everywhere. Bugling and activity were at a high pitch so my son decided to go to a campground and spend the night in his car. He shot a lot of pics on this trip. I missed it!
These were taken with a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT w/EF 100-400mm L lens. Exif intact. PP w/PSE8.
Enjoy these. Comments welcome.

There is only one kind of rack I like better then this.........................(whitetail...LOL)
We have a herd that runs the northern hills and every once in a while we can see them....saw the cows last week in a big field just up the road and about a month ago two bulls were sighted but I was going the wrong way and by the time I turned around both had left the clearing never to be seen again. Your sons pictures age nice and I hope in the future to be able to get some real nice captures like these.
Good photos. Very majestic. Well captured.
great set
that is some serious hat rack!

Wow! Powerful images of a majestic animal! He has my respect. (Do elk lose their racks every year as do deer?)
